When we bought this property we always had plans to have a small family homestead. We wanted to grow our own food and teach our kids where foods comes from and how to do hard work. We did start a garden and had ducks (that was a disaster) and chickens for eggs. We kept wanting to do more, but life happens and we never made plans to grow bigger. Well, the chaos of the world has ignited a fire inside of me to use the potential our property has. I did not like the feeling of going to the grocery store and seeing the empty shelves and feeling that panic not knowing if I was going to be able to feed my family. Because of the quarantine, Cavan has not had a lot of work. Since he has had some free time, he is using it to build fences. It all stared with us wanting to get cows for our own beef. So Cavan has been out in the pasture rebuilding the broken fence. We also just got meat chicks. I was so worried about raccoons picking off our meat chickens the way they did with our fist batch of chickens we had. I found a Anatolian Pyrenees Shepherd. They are bred to protect live stock. I found a breeder 3 hours away for such a good price. We named her Daisy. We then felt so bad for her that she was all alone. She just left her mom and dad and 4 brothers. She is an outside dog only and it didn't feel right to have her outside all alone. She just look so little and helpless. The kids slept with her outside in the outdoor kitchen the first night. We then bought 2 Nigerian Dwarfs goats. Two females. We are also getting a male on May 1st. We plan on breeding them and I'm going to milk them for goats milk. The females are really scared of us because they have not been exposed to people. We have named them Lemon and Sunny. The male is named Paco and is so friendly. He was bred by people who loves goats and are outside with them everyday. He is so snugly and funny! As soon as he breeds with the females, we are going castrate him. Turns out Buck goats are a pain to keep as pets. The fence for the cows should be done this week and then we will get the cows! I'm so excited!
